Hiroshige's 'Famous Places in Edo' (Mid-1830's - 1858)

The Prints

Many of the prints shown here were printed in multiple editions, at various times: the exact history, relationship of various publication instances, etc. is still being worked out. The dates shown on individual prints are therefore generally the date of the individual print illustrated, not the complete (as far as can be ascertained) publication history of that print.

Prints in all of the series covered here do not appear to have any numbers on them; any number given here (e.g. the 'ID' field, which is a database ID) is for local reference only.

Famous Places in Edo - Ca. 1850's

Characteristics: Double cartouche (one square, one vertical) in right ground
Publisher: Not certain

Some sources give the publisher of the Yoshiwara print as Kinkyōdō (Yamashō - Yamadaya Shōjirō). It (and the other print here) do certainly follow the title and cartouche format of other Kinkyōdō prints.

Characteristics: Double cartouche (one square, one vertical) in right ground
Publisher: Kinkyōdō (Yamashō - Yamadaya Shōjirō)

This is probably a continuation of the series of the same name from 1853/3-11, as it has the same publisher, and title cartouche format. Note that no impressions are known with different censor seals, so this probably is a later continuation, not a re-publication.

Characteristics: Single vertical cartouche with rounded top and inverse rounded bottom in right ground
Publishers: Yūeidō (Arisei - Aritaya Seiemon)

This series was apparently produced by two different publishers. For prints from this series, impressions are known with the same censor seals, but with differing publisher seals, so it is not absolutely clear which publisher was the original (if it was not a joint production, such things being not unknown in ukiyo-e, although it is thought to have been Aritaya Seiemon.

Publisher: Kinkyōdō (Yamashō - Yamadaya Shōjirō)

This is probably a further continuation of the previous series series of the same name, as it too has the same publisher, and title cartouche format. Again, no impressions are known with different censor seals, so this again is probably a later continuation, not a re-publication.

Acknowledgements

Thanks especially to the compilers of "The Edward Burr Van Vleck Collection of Japanese Prints" (Elvehjem Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1990), who made the first attempt known to this author to bring some order to this vast confusion, and whose work has been the tall shoulders upon which this online extension stands.

Thanks also to Fuji Arts, whose Web-site was the source of many additional prints; the Museum of Fine Arts, whose excellent Web-site of their collection provided many images, captions, etc; and John Resig, whose Japanese Woodblock Print Search site has been a great help in locating good images of these prints.
